Great South’s work to advance sustainable aquaculture in Murihiku Southland has been recognised on the national stage, with the organisation receiving a Highly Commended award at the Economic Development New Zealand Best Practice Awards. The acknowledgement, presented in the Excellence in Sector and Cluster Development category, highlights the collaboration, innovation and regional leadership behind the Murihiku Southland Aquaculture Pathway.

The award reflects the strength of the region-wide effort that has shaped the pathway. Developed by Great South, the Aquaculture Pathway brings together iwi, councils, industry partners, government agencies and community voices to build a shared vision for the future of aquaculture in Southland. Its focus on balancing economic potential with environmental responsibility has been central to its success and is now being recognised nationally.

Chief Executive Chami Abeysinghe said the accolade is a testament to the commitment and partnership shown across the region. She said the pathway demonstrates how Southland can work together to encourage investment, support new opportunities and create long-term benefits for local communities.

The leadership of Great South’s General Manager of Regional Strategy, Bobbi Brown, was also acknowledged, with her guidance helping ensure the pathway is grounded in strong research, collaboration and a clear understanding of regional aspirations.

The Aquaculture Pathway provides a practical and coordinated plan for developing a thriving, sustainable aquaculture sector in Southland. It outlines the research, actions and partnerships needed to unlock new economic opportunities, support jobs and diversify the regional economy while protecting the environment for future generations.

The national recognition reinforces the momentum already underway. Great South will continue working closely with iwi, industry and regional partners to advance the pathway and bring its full potential to life, with confidence that the region is moving in the right direction and achieving meaningful progress together.
