Great South has opened a Request for Proposal (RFP) process to identify a new operator to deliver the much-loved ILT Kidzone Festival, marking an important step toward securing the event’s long-term future in Murihiku Southland.

Great South Chief Executive Chami Abeysinghe said opening the tender was about building a sustainable future for an event that held a special place in the region.

“ILT Kidzone is a hugely valued event for Southland families and our wider community. This process is about finding the right partner to carry that legacy forward while bringing the capability and innovation needed to ensure it thrives into the future,” she said.

Established in 2005, ILT Kidzone has grown into Southland’s flagship children’s festival, known for its affordable, family-friendly experiences and strong community involvement.

Delivered during the July school holidays, the event has traditionally featured more than 100 hands-on activities, alongside a full programme of entertainment, attracting families from across the lower South Island.

The open tender process invites experienced event operators to take on the planning, delivery and ongoing operation of the festival, with proposals due by 5 June 2026.

Great South is seeking a partner who can deliver a high-quality, safe and inclusive event while maintaining strong connections with the Southland community and key stakeholders.

Mrs Abeysinghe said the move to an external delivery model followed a pause in 2025, allowing time to explore more sustainable ways to deliver an event of this scale.

“We know how important Kidzone is, not just as a fun school holiday experience but as a platform for community participation, volunteering and local fundraising. We’re looking for an operator who understands that and can build on it.”

Great South will work closely with the successful applicant to support a smooth transition and ensure the festival continues to deliver positive outcomes for the region.
